Electives Overview
The Pediatric RRC requires that each resident complete at least 4 different one month block rotations from the following list of subspecialties. At least 2 subspecialty rotations must be taken at the primary teaching site/and/or integrated hospitals.
- Allergy/Immunology
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology
- Gastroenterology
- Genetics and Metabolism
- Hematology/Oncology
- Infectious Diseases
- Nephrology
- Neurology
- Pulmonology
- Rheumatology
You may also choose to take other pediatric electives such as:
- Anesthesiology
- Burns (contact: Rob Sheridan)
- Child Protection
- Dermatology
- ENT
- International Medicine
- Ophthalmology
- Otolaryngology
- Orthopedics
- Radiology
- Surgical Subspecialties (outpatient)
The 1-month blocks do not have to be continuous and may be completed as two 2-week blocks over the 3 years. The exception is cardiology: preference is given to residents who can rotate for a consecutive month on this rotation. If you have any concerns about meeting these requirements, Emmett is flexible but please contact him as early as possible.
This document outlines information about individual electives, including contact names for the rotations. You are not limited to these, but these are the most common rotations residents do. For more information about electives, go to the curriculum page. Please contact Shannon Scott-Vernaglia with any questions about electives.
"Away Electives" must be approved in advance. The RRC mandates a minimum of 36 continuity clinics per year and away electives can seriously jeopardize this requirement. Jeanne Van Cleave and your continuity clinic preceptor must approve all electives that involve moving or canceling clinics at least 3 months in advance.
"Reading Electives" are generally discouraged. To do a reading elective, you must have a defined set of goals and objectives, to be overseen by a faculty mentor. These must have approval at least one month PRIOR to the start of the rotation by the mentor and the Promotions Committee. Email Dr. Friedmann, Promotion Committee Chairman, with your proposal and faculty supervisor’s name for approval by the Committee.
When scheduling an elective, the following steps must be taken:
- At least one month before the elective, call the course director of contact person listed in the elective guide. Many of these electives can accommodate only one resident at a time, so it is important to call as early as possible before your elective rotation begins.
- As soon as you have permission to take the elective from the course director, email Shannon Scott-Vernaglia, Therese D’Agostino, Liz Layton, and the chief residents to tell them what elective you will be taking and the dates. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS BEFORE THE START OF THE ELECTIVE, YOU WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR THE ELECTIVE.
- "Away Electives" require Program Director approval ahead of time and a paper evaluation from the preceptor. These evaluations are available to print through New Innovations.
- Contact the course director a few days ahead of time to arrange when and where to meet on the first day of the rotation.
- During your elective, please remind your faculty preceptors to complete an evaluation for you online at New Innovations. Also, please complete an evaluation of the rotation and faculty members.
