Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

Summary of Research

The unifying theme in Dr. Kohane's research is drug delivery. In this multidisciplinary field, the specific application is less important than the development of an approach or set of approaches. The skilled practitioner applies engineering principles, biology, and knowledge of biomaterials to achieve a given goal. While addressing specific disease states is important, the thrust of this research is to create methods by which drugs can be delivered to a range of sites in a variety of circumstances.

One area of emphasis is the development of controlled release local anesthetic formulations. That work also attempts to elucidate the pharmacology of candidate drugs, to discover synergistic drug combinations to render the formulations more potent, and studies their safety. Another focus is the development of a variety of formulations that are highly effective in preventing peritoneal adhesions in the rabbit, using hydrogels and other controlled release devices.

His group is also currently developing

  • antifungal surfaces
  • novel particulate systems for intracranial drug delivery
  • drug delivery systems to the eye and ear
  • formulations for chemoembolization
  • methods of preventing or treating tracheal stenosis
  • particles for intracellular drug delivery for vaccines and inborn errors of metabolism
  • systems for intra-articular delivery of drugs.
