About this Program

Overview

The Pediatric Pain Service provides specialized care to infants, children, and adolescents who suffer from a variety of acute and chronic pain syndromes. We offer both inpatient and outpatient evaluation and treatment of pain.

Our group consists of a specialized team, Dr. Leeman and Kristina DelTufo, RN, who work in consultation with child life specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, physical and occupational therapists to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to pain management. State-of-the-art techniques are used to provide safe and effective pain control for all children.

Ongoing pain is disruptive. Pain may limit your child’s ability to participate in school, sports, and social activities as well as your ability to maintain a normal home routine and work schedule. When standard therapies including surgery and medications have not been effective, we offer children the physical and psychological tools they need to lead an active life and cope with pain.

Inpatient Pediatric Pain Service

The inpatient division of the Pediatric Pain Service includes a consultation with the Pediatric Pain Registered Nurse, Kristina DelTufo, as well as either the Acute Pain Service or Chronic Pain Service, which includes attending physicians, fellow physicians and resident physicians collaborating to relieve the child’s pain.

Techniques used to treat pain include:

  • Medications such as intravenous opioids, intermittent or continuous infusions, and PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia)
  • Interventions such as epidural analgesia and regional nerve blocks
  • Therapy referrals such as cognitive and behavioral therapies, acupuncture, acupressure, massage therapy
  • Family intervention and education

Outpatient Pediatric Pain Clinic

The Pediatric Pain Clinic provides interdisciplinary evaluation of children and adolescents with persistent pain issues and functional impairment. Our evaluation will help determine which treatments will be most effective in helping your child return to normal activities. We give your child or adolescent the skills to manage pain, and teach you how to support their efforts.

When to seek help:

Whatever the source of your child’s pain, consider our pain clinic if your child:

  • Misses school on a regular basis
  • Has withdrawn from friends, social activities, sports, or other interests
  • Is experiencing increased stress and/or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to pain.
