The Pediatric Pain Program provides specialized care to infants, children, and adolescents who suffer from a variety of acute and chronic pain syndromes. We offer both inpatient and outpatient evaluation and treatment of pain.

Our group consists of a specialized team of physicians and nurse practitioners who work in consultation with child life specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, physical and occupational therapists to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to pain management.

State-of-the-art techniques are used to provide safe and effective pain control for all children.

Inpatient Pediatric Pain Service

Techniques used to treat pain include:

  • Intravenous opioids, intermittent and continuous infusions
  • PCAs (Patient Controlled Analgesia)

  • Epidural analgesia
  • Regional nerve blocks

  • Cognitive and behavioral therapies
  • Acupuncture, acupressure
  • Massage
  • Family intervention and education

In addition to inpatient services, our Pediatric Pain Clinic provides evaluation and treatment of recurrent or chronic pain syndromes.

Ongoing pain is disruptive

Pain may limit your child’s ability to participate in school, sports, and social activities, as well as your ability to maintain a normal home routine and work schedule. When standard therapies, including surgery and medications, have not been effective, we offer children the physical and psychological tools they need to lead an active life and cope with pain.

When to seek help

Whatever the source of your child’s pain, consider our pain clinic if your child:

  • Misses school on a regular basis
  • Has withdrawn from friends, social activities, sports, or other interests
  • Is experiencing increased stress and/or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to pain.

Outpatient Pediatric Pain Clinic

The Pediatric Pain Clinic provides interdisciplinary evaluation of children and adolescents with persistent pain issues and functional impairment. Our evaluation will help determine which treatments will be most effective in helping your child return to normal activities. We give your child or adolescent the skills to manage pain, and teach you how to support their efforts.

The advantages to this are convenience in scheduling appointments for your child.

We offer a range of comprehensive services, including:

  • Behavioral health services
  • Cognitive behavioral and complementary therapies
  • Rehabilitation therapies

Additional services include parent and family education and assistance with school re-entry.
