Overview

The Fetal/Maternal Medicine Program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) provides state-of-the-art fetal echocardiography (levels 1-3) to expectant mothers who may be concerned about cardiac abnormalities due to factors such as age, teratogen exposure, fetal early risk assessment or genetic factors.

Patients are seen promptly (if needed, within 24 hours), and results of studies are available quickly. If an abnormality is detected, expectant parents are given sensitive, yet objective, information about the ramifications and their options at the time of the visit.

If surgical treatment immediately following birth is indicated, MGHfC cardiologists are involved, along with the patient’s obstetrician, to discuss and plan treatment well in advance of the baby’s birth. This proactive, multidisciplinary approach among all the key members of the clinical team plays an important role in achieving the best possible outcomes for newborns, as well as greater peace of mind for expectant parents.
