Meet the Team
Launched in the fall of 2008, the MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) Pediatric Trauma Follow-Up Clinic provides comprehensive, expert evaluation and expeditious specialty referrals for children who have sustained a traumatic injury and previously undergone evaluation and treatment in the hospital or ambulatory setting.
With the exception of patients with a single-system injury who are already being seen by a specialist, children who have sustained virtually any type of traumatic injury (such as sport injuries, motor vehicle accidents, home accidents, violence) may be referred to the clinic.
Staffed by MGHfC pediatric trauma surgeon Peter Masiakos, MD, and pediatric trauma nurse practitioner Caren Harris, PNP, the role of the clinic is to assess patients’ recovery, check for missed injuries or ongoing problems, and assist with patients’ reentry into school and the community.
Evaluations are highly individualized, but may range from simple or complex wound care with suture removal to post-concussion evaluation, or a full, multispecialty survey for complex, multi-system injuries.
When indicated, timely referrals to MGHfC specialists — for example, orthopedists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, mental health professionals and others — are provided to ensure that each patient receives optimal, timely and well-coordinated care.
The clinic welcomes referrals from emergency or primary care physicians and is available, by appointment only, every Tuesday from 11 am to 4 pm.
