The Fetal/Maternal Medicine Program

This program provides state-of-the-art, fetal echocardiography (levels 1-3) to expectant mothers who may be concerned about cardiac abnormalities due to factors such as age, teratogen exposure, fetal early risk assessment, or genetic factors. This program is led by pediatric cardiologist Judith Becker, MD, who subspecializes in fetal echocardiography.

Patients are seen promptly (if needed, within 24 hours), and results of studies are available quickly. If an abnormality is detected, expectant parents are given sensitive, yet objective, information about the ramifications and their options at the time of the visit.  Most examinations can be performed at MGHfC in Boston, at MGHfC at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton or MGHfC at North Shore Children's Hospital in Salem. For scheduling in Boston or Newton, please call 617-726-6299. For scheduling in Salem, please call 978-354-2760.

If an abnormality is detected, expectant parents are given sensitive, yet objective, information about the ramifications and their options. If surgical treatment immediately following birth is indicated, MassGeneral Hospital for Children cardiologists are involved, along with the patient’s obstetrician, to discuss and plan treatment well in advance of the baby’s birth. This proactive, multidisciplinary team approach among all the key members of the clinical team plays an important role in achieving the best possible outcomes for newborns, as well as greater peace of mind for expectant parents.
