Ophthalmology services at MassGeneral Hospital for Children are provided by the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) Department of Ophthalmology. The MEEI Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service provides care for a variety of ophthalmic problems, including:

  • Evaluation and treatment of amblyopia
  • Pediatric cataracts
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • Congenital glaucoma
  • Pediatric and adult strabismus, including orthoptic evaluation, non-surgical and surgical treatment
  • Use of adjustable sutures in strabismus surgery
  • Botulinum injections
  • Prism adaptation

Care and treatment of pediatric corneal, retinal, and orbital disorders as well as glaucoma are provided in conjunction with other subspecialties at MEEI.

Specialty Care

Consultative care is provided to patients with problems including:

  • Blurry vision
  • Failed vision screens at school or the pediatrician
  • Strabismus such as crossed eyes, wandering eyes, “lazy eye”
  • Amblyopia
  • Difficulties learning

Surgical care is provided to patients with problems including:

  • Strabismus
  • Nasolacrimal duct obstruction
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
