The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation team focuses on maximizing functional abilities in children who have special needs. The physicians, who are trained in both pediatrics and in physical medicine and rehabilitation, help coordinate medical and functional programs for children who have impairments in mobility, fine motor skills, cognition, speech, and language skills. The goal is to enable the child to interact with his or her environment in the most effective manner possible.

Physicians work with children through a continuum of care. They will often see children in the intensive care unit after a traumatic injury, follow them through their rehabilitation program, and then through the ongoing recovery process. Recovery can take place in the home, in an outpatient setting, or be jointly managed with the child’s school district.

Rehabilitation is a team effort, involving the skills of many rehabilitation specialists: physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers, educators, psychologists and case managers. These specialists plan a coordinated program of care as well as design wheelchairs, orthotics, exercise and therapy programs.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital’s Pediatric Inpatient Unit is located at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary under the direction of Patrick Brennan, MD, and Ann Barrett, RN, MSN. The Unit includes fifteen beds, four physicians, and two nurse practitioners along with a full complement of other specialties and ancillary services.

  • Brain and spinal cord injuries
  • Multiple trauma
  • Cerebral palsy
