History
Massachusetts General Hospital has served children since it opened its doors in 1821, and now MassGeneral Hospital for Children is a modern children’s hospital within a hospital. The invention of anesthesia occurred at Mass General in 1846 and the first pediatric operation performed with anesthesia for a urologic condition was in 1847 by Henry J. Bigelow.
The current era of pediatric urology at Mass General began in 1961 when Dr. William Hardy Hendren became chief of pediatric surgery and pediatric urology. Dr. Hendren enjoys worldwide recognition for his many outstanding, groundbreaking contributions while here. Dr. Patricia Donahoe and Dr. Samuel Kim continued the tradition of excellence and innovation.
Dr. Rafael V. Pieretti has been the chief of pediatric urology since July, 2004. He has thirty-two years of experience in the field of pediatric urology.
