The principal investigator is responsible for assuring that a clinical research study is performed per protocol, and must be familiar with the rules regarding delegation of responsibility.
Principal Investigators (PIs) are responsible for the conduct of their studies. The PI may delegate certain duties to co-investigators and other members of the study team, but may not delegate the responsibility for assuring that the study is performed per the protocol.
It is important for PIs to understand all regulations regarding the delegation of responsibility, and that a Delegation of ResponsibilityLog be kept to catalogue all delegations that have occurred.
The Division of Clinical Research (DCR) at Massachusetts General Hospital helps to connect investigators and study staff members to a variety of courses, services and resources that provide assistance with every step of the clinical research process. These include offerings from the DCR itself, as well as associated research institutions and organizations. Mass General resources are listed first; DCR programs are noted in parentheses.
