He joined the Diabetes Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1995, where he is now dividing his time between a busy clinical practice and his clinical research efforts. He is the director of the MGH General Clinical Research Center Core Laboratory.
Dr. Cagliero is involved in different aspects of clinical diabetes research. He is currently studying the role of insulin resistance on cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes, and conducting a clinical trial on the role of thiazolidinediones in reducing heart disease in diabetes.
He is also interested in novel therapies for diabetes and specifically on islet transplantation, being in charge of the clinical trial unit of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Center for Islet Transplantation at Harvard Medical School.
He is also collaborating with the General Medicine Division on assessing and improving the care for type 2 diabetic patients in primary care. For these studies he has worked at designing diabetes management applications (web-based, designed in collaboration with the Laboratory of Computer Sciences) and tested them in randomized trials.
