Biography

Dr. Springfield earned his BA from Emory University in 1967 and his MD from the University of Florida, College of Medicine in 1971. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1976 at the University of Florida, after which he spent two years in the Army. Following his return from the Army, Dr. Springfield completed a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncologic Surgery and Pathology at the University of Florida.

From 1978 to 1987 Dr. Springfield was on the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Florida. He first came to Massachusetts General Hospital in 1987, serving on the faculty of Harvard Medical School until 1996. From 1996 to 2006, Dr. Springfield was the Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He came back to MGH in 2006, and currently serves in multiple academic roles guiding medical students, orthopaedic residents and fellows.

Research

Dr. Springfield's research interests have been concentrated on innovative surgical treatments for musculoskeletal tumors. He is particularly interested in the education of medical students and orthopaedic residents.

A special first dance

As a child suffering from Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, Marcela Gaviria complained to her surgeon, Dempsey Springfield, MD, that she would never get married.
