BiographyIn addition to revising the leading pediatric anesthesia textbook, my research focuses primarily on clinical anesthesia of children. My previous work included patient safety issues, monitoring modalities, sedation by non-anesthesiologists, and clinical pharmacology. The latter area is my current major focus. Within the pediatric subset, I investigate the clinical efficacy of pharmaceuticals approved for use in the adult population.
Another focus is basic pharmacology in children with burn injuries at the Shriners Burn Institute. These patients have enormous changes in volume of distribution, protein binding, renal, hepatic, and cardiac function, all of which markedly alter the response to medications and the metabolism of medications. Finally, I expect to expand my clinical research to encompass the study of children with obstructive sleep apnea and children undergoing tracheal reconstruction.
