BiographyFumito Ichinose, M.D. Ph.D. is an attending physician in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Ichinose received his M.D. degree from the Faculty of Medicine, The Universityof Tokyo. After completing a medicalinternship, Dr. Ichinose started anesthesia residency at TeikyoUniversity School of Medicine. Heemigrated to the United States and completed his residency inAnesthesia at the Department of Anesthesia of MassachusettsGeneral Hospital. Dr. Ichinose thencontinued his postgraduate training as a Clinical and Research Fellow at MGH, participating in the Cardiothoracic AnesthesiaFellowship and basic science research training in cardiopulmonary physiology and nitric oxide biology. Dr. Ichinose is a Diplomate ofthe American Board of Anesthesiology.
ResearchDr. Ichinose has a broad, innovative, andtranslational research focus on the organ protective roles of nitric oxide (NO)and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). He is an expert in cardiovascularphysiology who has developed several unique experimental models that enable detailed characterization of organ dysfunction associated withcritical illness. He has created innovative models of several clinical conditions, including sepsis and post-cardiacarrest organ dysfunction. Dr. Ichinosehas discovered previously unrecognized protective roles for NO and H2Sin major organs including the brain, heart, and liver. At MGH, he now directs ahighly productive basic and translational resuscitation science laboratory. Thiscombined basic science and clinical research program currently employs 10 research staff.
