Biography
Dr. Hutter is a General and Gastrointestinal surgeon, who specializes in minimally invasive surgery, including the colon, stomach, small bowel, gallbladder and hernias. He also specializes in bariatric surgery.
Dr. Hutter grew up in Needham, MA, and went to Harvard University and Harvard Medical School, and then completed General Surgery Residency at Mass. General Hospital. He was The Chief Resident in Surgery, and completed a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been on the surgical staff since 2002.
Research
Dr. Hutter's research is focused on the study of clinical effectiveness in surgery. He has completed a Masters in Public Health degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. He currently is the Director of the Codman Center for Clinical Effectiveness in Surgery at the MGH.
Dr. Hutter has many leadership roles in the field of Bariatric Surgery and Surgical Outcomes. He is the co-chairman of the SAGES Bariatric Committee, and also the co-chair of the SAGES Outcomes Committee. He is on the advisory board for the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network, and has developed and implemented their national data collection system for bariatric surgery. He is the Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health/ Betsy Lehman Center Expert Panel on Weight Loss Surgery.
Dr. Hutter plays a leadership role in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. He is the co-chair of the ACS-NSQIP Collaboration Committee, and is a member of the Policy Committee, the Measurement and Evaluation Committee, and the Definitions Committee.
His overall academic focus is on the development, implementation and responsible use of data collection systems in Surgery, with a focus on assessing and improving the quality of surgical care.
