BiographyMy clinical research and basic science interests focus on critical illness. In the lab, we are studying myocardial function in sepsis. The septic syndrome has a prevalence of 750,000 cases annually, with a mortality greater than 40%. Myocardial dysfunction associated with sepsis is one of the hallmarks of the disease. The underlying cellular mechanisms are not fully understood. Using a combination of physiologic and molecular biologic methods, we are investigating the signaling cascades leading to myocardial depression in sepsis. The ultimate goal is to identify therapeutic targets and hopefully decrease the high mortality of the disease.
Clinically, we are currently concentrating on airway management in critically ill patients. The work concentrates on complications and outcome of emergent airway management as well as on the best practices for tracheostomized patients.
