Narrative report

I am a cardiologist, and spend 40% time in clinicalechocardiography and 60% time in the research laboratory (10% time in bothsettings dedicated to teaching). My research interest is to further theunderstanding of heart failure progression; echocardiography is a crucial toolthat allows me to link signaling pathways to the organ level, and apply basicresearch findings to clinical research.

One particular topic of interest in my research has been to better understand the role of nitric oxide in the development of heart failure. As obesity is affecting an increasing proportion of the western societies, Iwanted to study the interaction between metabolic challenges, heart functionand nitric oxide.

Furthermore, I develop, validate and lead the platform ofmouse echocardiography as a tool to better build up noninvasive diagnosticmodalities that further the understanding of heart failure in humans. Some ofmy recent work applies echocardiographic indices of myocardial function frommice to humans. Using findings in a mouse model of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity, we validated echocardiography as a predictor of later cardiotoxicity. I am now the principal investigator on a multicenter prospective study assessing similar indices in women with breast cancer.
