Dr. Emerick is an otolaryngologist with fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Reconstructive surgery. His practice is based at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Emerick's clinical focus is two fold: The first is on the surgical management of head and neck tumors. This includes both benign and malignant tumors involving skin, aerodigestive tract and salivary glands. The second is on reconstructive surgery associated with head and neck tumors. This includes the management of Moh's surgical defects, local and regional flap reconstruction, and microvascular free tissue transplantation.
Dr. Emerick is also actively involved in clinical research. His research includes the assessment of surgical outcomes following head and neck reconstructive surgery and the study of unique features of head and neck melanoma and utility of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the head and neck regio. He also studies head and neck cancer survival outcomes in coordination with the Laboratory for Quantitative Medicine. Dr. Emerick is also active in the resident and fellowship training programs at the Harvard Combined Otolaryngology Program.
- Research Summary
Dr. Emerick is involved in several areas of clinical research. He is the site PI for multiple multi-site research efforts focusing on clinical outcomes from head and neck cancer treatments and reconstruction following head and neck surgery.
Dr. Emerick is studying methods of improving the technique of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the head and neck region. This includes studying the utility of SPECT CT imaging preoperatively as well as intraoperative techniques to improve the diagnostic accuracy and safety for this procedure. He is also engaged in research to better understand the apparent increased lethality of head and neck cutaneous melanoma.
Lastly, Dr. Emerick works in collaboration with the Laboratory of Quantitative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Current work involves creating a web-based outcomes calculator to predict outcomes of head and neck cancers. This research will further increase our understanding of the significance of specific clinicopathologic features and how they impact survival.
