
Dr. Rubash is a leading orthopaedic surgeon, researcher and educator who has made important advances in hip and knee replacement surgery, developing new technologies and improving patient outcomes.
Biography
Dr. Rubash earned his BS Summa Cum Laude in 1975 and his MD Cum Laude in 1979, both from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his Internship in general surgery followed by a Fellowship and Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Rubash completed an AO Reconstructive and Trauma Fellowship in Munich, Germany and a Hip and Implant Surgery Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Rubash is the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at MGH and the Edith M. Ashley Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in primary and revision hip and knee replacements.
Dr. Rubash has earned numerous awards and honors from professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The Orthopaedic Research Society, The Hip Society, The Knee Society and the American Fracture Association. In 2006, Dr. Rubash received the Clinical Research Award for Outstanding Orthopaedic Clinical Research by the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation.
Dr. Rubash has shared his expertise at innumerable conferences, seminars and workshops throughout the world and has published extensively, including serving in editorial capacities for multiple journals and publications.
Dr. Rubash has written five major text books and published over 200 papers.
Research
Dr. Rubash has made significant contributions to the study of biomechanics and failure mechanisms of joint arthroplasty in the hip and knee in order to develop better implant designs, simplify operative implant techniques, and develop new materials for implant-bearing surfaces, including the successful development of new reconstructive techniques.
Dr. Rubash is interested in revision total hip arthroplasty with major bone loss, revision total knee arthroplasty with component malalignment and infection, and avascular necrosis of the hip, a devastating disease that often affects young people in the primes of their lives. He has developed several new reconstructive techniques for acetabular fractures, acetabular and femoral component revisions, revision knee surgeries, and periprosthetic osteolysis.

The Austrian, Swiss, German Traveling Fellowship is a program that was started in 1978 when the Austrian, Swiss and German Orthopaedic Associations sponsored a tour for four young orthopaedic surgeons to travel to Britain, the United States and Canada. In 1984, the American Orthopaedic Association became involved. Now one Austrian, one Swiss and two German orthopaedists tour during odd years, and one Canadian, one British and two American orthopeadists tour during even years.
The President of the Republic of Latvia, Dr. Valdis Zatlers visited the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery on September 28, 2010. President Zatlers is an orthopaedic surgeon and completed his Fellowship training in the early 1990s at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Sports Medicine Service. He was mentored by Dr. Bertram Zarins, MD, who currently is Chief Emeritus of the Sports Medicine Service. The President toured the Sports Medicine Center along with the Latvian ambassador to the United States, Mr. Andrejs Pildegovics, MGH President, Dr. Peter Slavin and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Harry Rubash.
