Aranya Bagchi, MBBS, and Lorenzo Berra, MD, will discuss the rationale and the effects of using starch in a recent randomized, controlled trial on the use of starch in critically ill patients.

Dr. Bagchi is an anesthesiologist and intensivist in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (DACCPM). Dr. Bagchi's clinical interests include thoracic anesthesia, fluid resuscitation and the use of point-of-care ultrasound in critically ill patients. His research is focused on the role of bone morphogenetic protein-hepcidin axis in the pathogenesis of sepsis and acute lung injury.

Dr. Berra is a physician at the Critical Care Division of DACCPM. Dr. Berra's interests are the care of critically ill patients and medical research in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) settings. His research areas include alterations of the nitric oxide physiology in the presence of circulation plasma cell-free hemoglobin, emerging approaches in the prevention of ventilator associated complications and characteristics of the inflammatory response of patients in ICU.
