Continuing the legacy

Willard M. Daggett, MD, retired MGH cardiac surgeon and founder of the MGH Laboratory of Surgical Cardiovascular Physiologic Research, mentored hundreds of surgical trainees during his 50-year career at the MGH. His influence has fostered innovative research in surgical techniques for heart transplantation and complex cardiac surgical repairs. Students, surgeons, colleagues and patients all have benefited from his work.

To continue to stimulate the advancements in the area of cardiothoracic research, Cary W. Akins, MD, and his colleagues at the MGH Division of Cardiac Surgery established the Willard M. Daggett Cardiothoracic Research Scholarship. All residents and fellows from any surgical specialty currently conducting or planning to conduct research in some aspect of cardiothoracic surgery at the MGH were encouraged to apply for the award.

The inaugural recipients of the scholarship were named at the Dec. 18 Department of Surgery Grand Rounds. Gregory Veillette, MD, and Timothy M. Millington, MD, both of the Department of Surgery, were awarded $5,000 each by Daggett and Joren C. Madsen, MD, section head of Cardiac Surgery and director of the MGH Transplant Center. Veillette is examining "The Effects of Donor Brain Death and Prolonged Cold Ischemia on Lung Graft Tolerogenicity," and Millington is exploring "The Induction of Immunologic Tolerance to Cardiac Allografts." The researchers will use their scholarship awards to help further their research experiences.
