The recipients of the Brian A. McGovern, MD, Award for Clinical Excellence were announced May 16 at the MGPO Annual Physician Recognition Dinner. This year's award winners and the categories in which they were selected are: Dennis Burke, MD, of the Department of Orthopædics, representing Surgical Services; David Ebb, MD, of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit, representing Other Services; and Karen O’Brien, MD, of MGH Women's Health Associates, representing Medical Services.
Burke, Ebb and O’Brien were selected from among 117 MGPO physicians who were nominated for their dedication, patient-centered care and clinical excellence -- qualities that MGH cardiologist Brian McGovern, MD, embodied. After McGovern's tragic death in 2003, the MGPO created the award -- which is given every 18 months to three physicians -- in his memory.
Presenting this year's award to recipients was David Torchiana, MD, MGPO chairman and CEO. "Tonight is about clinical excellence and the underappreciated heroes of clinical medicine, like Dr. McGovern, who work to take great care of patients but don’t always get the recognition they deserve," said Torchiana. "For all of the advances in medicine, the technology and the procedures, it is the way we treat our patients, and each other, that sets great physicians apart."
Past McGovern recipient Nesli Basgoz, MD, of the Infectious Disease Unit, presented the status on a collaborative project that she and other McGovern awardees have been working on -- the MGH commitment to the continuity of patient care excellence. Speaking on behalf of all the McGovern award recipients, she highlighted the challenges of perfecting the continuity of patient care in a complex world. She encouraged attendees by saying, "The wisdom, imagination, commitment and resources present here tonight, if brought to bear on this problem, could find solutions."
Through the generosity of the Ira and Jacquie Stepanian Recognition Endowment of Excellence, all of this year's winners receive a stipend.
