Cyclists take to the streets to conquer childhood cancer
RIDING FOR A CAUSE: Weinstein completes his 50-mile trek to benefit MGHfC.
NOW IN ITS EIGHTH YEAR, the Granite State Quest (GSQ) is a 50- or 100-mile bicycle ride through southern New Hampshire that benefits the Center for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). This year, the one-day event started and finished at the Timberland Company in Stratham, N.H., on July 10 with more than 100 cyclists and 20 volunteers riding and working throughout a day of rain showers.
"A few raindrops did not dampen the spirits and commitment of the riders," says Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of MGHfC Pediatric Hematology and Oncology and one of the cyclists. "Our mission was to go out there and provide individuals and families with the opportunity to participate in the quest to conquer childhood cancer, and all of the riders completed their goals."
Adds Tucker O'Day, MSPT, program manager for Ergonomics at Partners Occupational Health Service, "We were delighted with the number of riders participating in this year's event -- double the number of riders from last year! We estimate that our fundraising will exceed $100,000, which will result in an eight-year total of $767,000."
All of the funds raised by the riders benefit pediatric research and cancer care at MGHfC. Next year's GSQ will take place July 9. For more information, contact Bruce Taylor at 603-773-1345.
