MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) has joined Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) to provide a comfortable and restful space for family members of children receiving care. The two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms -- adjacent to the pediatric inpatient rooms on Ellison 17 and 18 -- are sunlit corner rooms featuring expansive views of Boston, tasteful artwork, computers, mini-kitchens and a large aquarium with colorful fish. Marilyn Gifford, CCLS, of Child Life Services, says that the artwork and furniture were selected with serenity in mind. Because Ellison 17 and 18 are decorated with an underwater ocean-theme mural, the rooms' designer decorated each family room with tones of beige and yellow, representing a beach to complement the oceans of the hallways.
To mark the completion of the Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms at MGHfC, a June 29 ceremony was held with special guests Cathy E. Minehan, chair of the MGH Board of Trustees, RMHC of Eastern New England respresentatives and two "Ronalds" -- Ronald Kleinman, MD, MGHfC physician-in-chief, and Ronald McDonald, who appeared in full regalia. Kleinman described the difference the new rooms have made for parents of hospitalized children.
"When I walked by and noticed the parents and siblings relaxing in these rooms, it was apparent by the look on each of their faces that they were in the space to find peace and rest from what can be a very stressful time," said Kleinman. "We are grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities for this wonderful gift that has already been so beneficial to our patients and their families."
