An estimated 65,000 individuals attended the Boston Health & Fitness Expo hosted by Partners HealthCare and WHDH-7 News June 25 and 26 at the Hynes Convention Center. Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, officially kicked off the event at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and several WHDH-7 News personalities.
At the MGH booth, nutritionists offered passersby nutrition and food allergy information and provided approximately 500 individualized nutrition screenings, which included portion size recommendations, body mass index screenings, calorie count guidelines and healthy snack food information. Clinicians from the MGH Food Allergy Center informed attendees of the most common food allergens, offered one-on-one information about living with food allergies and provided advice on how to read food labels, grocery shop and dine out.
At the MassGeneral Hospital for Children booth, children and their families had the chance to meet New England Patriots alumni Ilia Jarostchuk, Jim Murphy, Kerry Taylor and Ed Ellis, along with mascot “Pat the Patriot” and team cheerleaders. Attendees also received information about “NFL PLAY 60: The NFL Movement for an Active Generation,” a campaign designed to tackle childhood obesity.
