Breaking down barriers

In academia, it’s a remarkable achievement for any physician to be promoted to full professor. For Department of Medicine physician Valerie Stone, MD, MPH, the first African-American woman faculty member at the MGH to become a full Harvard Medical School (HMS) professor, the accomplishment is particularly special. In addition to the hospital milestone, Stone is the second African-American woman to hold a professorship at HMS and the first African American of either gender to become a full professor in the HMS Department of Medicine.

“With this appointment, Dr. Stone joins an esteemed group of MGHers who have broken down barriers in the medical profession,” says Elena Olson, executive director of the MGH Multicultural Affairs Office. “She is a wonderful role model for our future health care leaders.”

Stone’s appointment to full professor was announced earlier this spring. At the MGH, Stone is a physician in the Department of Medicine’s Internal Medicine Associates and in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She also is director of the Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program and associate chief for Teaching and Training in the General Medicine Division. Her research focuses on health care disparities and HIV/AIDS.

“Supporting diversity in our workforce is a top priority for the MGH,” says Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president. “We are very proud of Dr. Stone for this well-deserved achievement.”
