On Saturday, August 20 over a hundred ovarian cancer survivors and their supporters came to Mass General from as far away as California for the 2nd Annual Ovarian Cancer Survivors Course. The free course, sponsored by the Foundation for Women’s Cancers and jointly hosted by Mass General’s Cancer Center and Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, featured lectures, panels and discussions about the latest issues in ovarian cancer research and treatment.

According to course co-director Michael Birrer, MD, PhD, disease center leader for the Mass General Center for Gynecologic Oncology, “participants especially enjoyed the two panel discussions where they were able to engage our physicians and investigators about a wide range of issues.”

"We wanted to focus on the multidisciplinary nature of cancer care for women," says course co-director John Schorge, MD, clinical director of the Center for Gynecologic Oncology. "Women need to know about the full spectrum of care, from surgical advances and the latest medical treatments, to complementary therapies like acupuncture."

Survivors also embraced the opportunity to network with each other. “I don’t know anyone else in my circle with ovarian cancer,” explains survivor Kim Lohnes. “The course offered a great opportunity to swap ideas and stories and talk about treatment regimens and side effects with other women who are in the same boat.”
