Division of Global Health & Human Rights
Massachusetts General Hospital

The mission of the Division of Global Health & Human Rights is to care for the world’s most vulnerable by developing and facilitating health-care delivery, research, education and capacity-building initiatives. The Division is led by Thomas F. Burke, MD.

We currently operate three health programs:

  • The Initiative to End Slavery (IES) takes a comprehensive public health approach to the issue of human trafficking and slavery, and encompasses research, programmatic and advocacy work.

  • The Maternal and Infant Health Initiative (MIHI) is a health program that works in the Kapiri Mposhi district of rural Zambia. MIHI hopes to create a coordinated model of maternal and infant care that can be tested, improved and ultimately rolled out to other districts.

  • The Health Education Alliance for Liberia (HEAL) provides clinical service and education deployments to help Liberia develop a sustainable and indigenous system for the training of health care providers.

The Division’s website is currently under construction. Please check back late this fall to view our full roster of projects and initiatives. For questions about the Division, please contact Elizabeth Cafferty, MSc, or Roy Ahn, ScD.
