Overview

The Massachusetts General Hospital Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine is now in its fifth decade of existence and has trained over one hundred fellows. Steeped in institutional and programmatic tradition, the fellowship strives to maintain its foundational educational values while advancing—and advancing with—the field of psychosomatic medicine. Mass General is the largest hospital in New England with nearly 1000 inpatient beds and is a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

With its strong roots, diverse training experiences, and investment in the intellectual and personal development of each fellow, the Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine provides thoughtful and hard-working advanced trainees with the tools needed for a successful career in this rewarding and challenging subspecialty.

Elements of the Fellowship

Our fellowship focuses on:

  • Inpatient consultation
  • Advanced neuropsychiatric training
  • Professional development of trainees’ identities as physicians and medical specialists/experts
  • Onsite outpatient experiences, including
    • A neuropsychiatry clinic (within which is embedded an expanding program for the treatment of functional movement disorders)
    • A specialty clinic elective (co-localized in either the HIV/Hepatitis C or oncology clinic)
    • A primary care psychiatry experience using a collaborative care model

Fellows receive two hours of individual supervision with fellowship director Nicholas Kontos, MD and director emeritus Gregory Fricchione, MD weekly, as well as weekly group walk rounds, daily rounds and a thrice weekly “running of the list” with members of the fellowship staff and several other faculty members. Two didactic hours per week are set aside strictly for fellows, with a year-long focus on neuropsychiatry, plus special modules on psychodynamic theory/application and on leadership, as well as sessions covering the broad array of core topics in psychosomatic medicine.

As with all the rest of our curriculum, these lectures pull from a “deep bench” of talented faculty from our division, department and interdepartmental staff. A monthly seminar on “Professionalism, Physicianhood and Psychiatric Practice,” derived and led by Dr. Kontos and Oliver Freudenreichm, MD, further expresses our commitment to the development of each fellow’s professional identity and ethical rigor.
