URM Harvard Medical School Students Mentorship Program
The purpose of the URM Harvard Medical School Students Mentorship Program is to provide structured professional and social support, as well as guidance, during the early stages of our URM student careers from Harvard Medical School.
The mentorship is supported by the HMS Office of Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs, the MGH Multicultural Affairs Office, the BWH Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers under their Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, the Diversity and Cultural Competency Council (DCCC), Children's Hospital Boston, and the Office for Faculty Development and the Shapiro Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Mission and Objectives:
- To develop and maintain a formal physician/researcher and URM medical student mentoring program in Massachusetts as a model for other regions of the United States
- To foster mentoring relationships between URM medical students and physicians or researchers in academic and private institutions
- To establish a communication network between medical schools, government and industry to enhance opportunities for URM medical students
- To develop organized advocacy groups among students and faculty across academic medical institutions
“My mentor has been a great role model for a career in research as a physician-scientist. The match process worked so well for me that I selected her to serve on my PhD thesis committee. I greatly appreciate the URM mentorship program’s guidance and networking opportunities, which have contributed to my success as a medical student.”
—José Alemán, HMS Class of 2009
