The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital offers a two-year Orofacial Pain Residency program. This program provides advanced training in orofacial pain, headache disorders and dental sleep medicine. The program consists of clinical training with program faculty and elective rotations through various related departments, including the Center for Pain Medicine, Physical Therapy, Head and Neck Imaging, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Division of Sleep Medicine, Behavioral Psychology and the Faulkner Hospital Headache Center. Clinical training is supplemented by a comprehensive didactic program. Teaching opportunities at Mass General and Harvard School of Dental Medicine will also be available.

Goals and Objectives of the Orofacial Pain Residency Program

  • A basic understanding of the mechanisms involving pain
  • A basic understanding of the anatomical, physiological, biological, pathophysiological,and medical processes involved with pain disorders of the head, face, and neck
  • An understanding of the field of orofacial pain and the epidemiologic characteristics of these syndromes
  • Competency in the examination and evaluation of orofacial pain patients
  • Competency in the diagnosis and management of the orofacial pain patient
  • Competency to coordinate care for orofacial pain patients either as a single clinician or within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Competency to evaluate outcomes of treatment for orofacial pain patients
  • Competency to develop and/or evaluate research projects in orofacial pain

  • Graduate of an accredited US or Canadian dental school. Applicants with a degree from a foreign dental school will be considered based upon their transcripts, curriculum vitae, training, acceptable TOEFL score and a personal interview
  • Citizen of the United States, non-citizen resident or foreign national having in his/her possession a visa permitting temporary status in the United States and educational licensure
  • Massachusetts Dental License or equivalent temporary/intern license
