To meet the health needs of the Sagam community, Mass General is facilitating the construction of an emergency center and the rehabilitation of an operating theater. Through a partnership with Maseno University, we are creating a post-graduate residency program in Emergency and Family Medicine.

The Global Health Innovation Laboratory has launched a Center of Excellence in Medicine and Innovations in partnership with a 52-bed rural community hospital west of Kisumu, Kenya. Sagam Community Hospital serves a region of Nyanza Province where the citizens are primarily subsistence farmers living on less than $2/day, and the local disease burden is heavily affected by malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and HIV and its complications. As part of our collaboration, Mass General is facilitating the construction of an emergency center and the rehabilitation of an operating theater to meet the needs of the community and these health concerns. Our team provides a force of academic and clinical continuity in the community and has made great strides in improving the systems, patient care, and clinical education at the hospital.

Mass General is also partnering with Maseno University and has created a post-graduate residency program in Emergency and Family Medicine which launched Sept 15, 2014. The program is four years and will teach residents how to respond critically and comprehensively in low-resource settings such as Nyanza province. Our Global Health fellows will work in collaboration with the dedicated faculty at Maseno University to ensure that the graduating residents will mark a new wave of physicians in Kenya that can address the communities' needs holistically and effectively. Our faculty and trainees will always have an eye to innovate in order to solve previously intractable challenges and to transform systems of care delivery.
