1. Relaxation Response: How to Counteract the Harmful Effects of Stress -

Speaker: Herbert Benson, MD, Founder and Director Emeritus, Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine

Dr. Benson will discuss research on the physiology underlying the relaxation response, as well as studies on the effects of stress on performance and productivity. This seminar will be an introduction to a series of Stress Reduction Sessions for Researchers that the ORCD will run in conjunction with Human Resources and the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine.

1. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MGH Physician-Scientists Development Award due Mar 7 -

Four Year Awards for Researchers Underrepresented in Basic and Clinical Science

This Award is intended to provide transitional funding for support in the development of physician-scientists underrepresented in academic medicine, and thereby increase opportunities for URM researchers to advance to senior positions in academic medicine at MGH. The Multicultural Affairs Office will evaluate the need for this Award on a regular basis.

The Application deadline is 4 pm, March 7, 2008. Applications must be delivered to Olga Comninos, 50 Staniford Street, 10th floor. (Same floor as Grants & Contracts.)

2. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MGH Clinician-Teacher Development Award due Mar 7 -

Four Year Awards for Clinicians and Teachers Underrepresented in Academic Medicine

This Award is intended to provide funding for support in the development of clinicians and teachers underrepresented in academic medicine, and thereby increase opportunities for their advancement to senior positions in academic medicine at MGH. The funding shall be used as a grant to support the awardee in her/his pursuit of a project in teaching, clinical innovation and/or academic community service to allow such physicians to meet the criteria for promotions at Harvard Medical School. The Multicultural Affairs Office will evaluate the need for this Award on a regular basis.

3. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar due Mar 7 -

July 12 - 15, 2008 - RItz-Carlton Hotel - Washington, DC

This seminar is a three-day program designed for women assistant professors. The program focuses on academic medicine career-building and skills in CV development and basic management skills. The accomplished seminar faculty offer inspiration and valuable career advice. Attendees are encouraged to develop career goals and objectives through the career mapping sessions. The seminar is targeted primarily at physicians, but is also pertinent for Ph.D. scientists.

The application must be completed online no later than Friday, March 7, 2008. A complete application requires submission of your Curriculum Vitae (CV).

4. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MGH ECOR Interim Support Fund due Mar 31

For Basic and Clinical Research Investigators
(To accommodate PIs who are waiting for Study Section Critiques)
Deadline 4:00 pm, February 20, 2008

ECOR offers Interim Support Fund (ISF) grants to assist MGH investigators with salary and fringe benefit support and supplies during a lapse or delay in the principal investigator’s research funding from the NIH or another Federal agency (e.g., the National Science Foundation or the Department of Defense). To be eligible, applicants for Interim Support must have applied as PI for an NIH or other Federal agency grant in support of independent long-term support for the proposed research program and have correspondence (e.g., summary statement, critique or other written indication from agency program staff) indicating that funding has not been awarded.

Awards are for $57,500 ($50,000 direct costs plus $7,500 indirect costs). The funds may be used for salaries and fringe benefits for principal investigators and/or their key laboratory personnel and for supplies.

Upon receipt of alternative funding for the research project supported by the ISF award, investigators must return the unspent portion of the ISF award to the ECOR Interim Support Fund.

6. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: FHWIM Alma Dea Morani Awards due Apr 15 -

The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine is currently accepting nominations for the 2008 Alma Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award. This Award will honor an outstanding woman physician or scientist in North America who has advanced the practice and understanding of medicine in our lifetime and made significant contributions outside of medicine, for example, in the humanities, arts or social sciences, whose determination and spirit have carried her beyond traditional pathways in medicine and science; and who challenges the status quo with a passion for learning. Deadline for submission of nominations is April 15, 2008.
