The Mass General Fibroid Program diagnoses and treats people with uterine fibroids, infertility and pelvic pain. We combine the expertise of specialists from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Mass General Interventional Radiology to provide patients with multiple treatment options.

Our patients have one point of access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists that includes Mass General infertility specialists, gynecologists, gynecologic surgeons, interventional radiologists and radiologists who specialize in reading abdominal scans.

Uterine fibroids are the most frequently seen tumors of the female reproductive system. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive image-guided treatment for fibroid tumors of the uterus available at the main hospital in Boston. Learn more about this treatment.

Treatment Options

Our team collaborates to create a care plan customized to individual medical needs and lifestyle choices. This approach can result in shorter time to diagnosis and treatment, helping our patients lead active lives.

For patients of child-bearing age, we offer minimally invasive surgery to maintain fertility. For patients who do not want to get pregnant, minimally invasive image-guided procedures are available. Options include:

  • Watchful waiting, which means close observation by specialists before active management
  • Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) conducted by interventional radiologists
  • Surgery including myomectomy, hysterectomy, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and ablation conducted by surgeons specializing in gynecology

What to Expect

During the initial consultation, our patients receive a full evaluation and careful assessment of their medical situation. They meet one-on-one with specialists to learn about their options and choose an approach that’s best for them.

Our nurse coordinator handles all aspects of a patient’s care. She is available to schedule appointments and connect patients to resources including translation services and financial coordinators.

Our Patients

Our patients talk about what it's like to live with uterine fibroids and the choices they made to take action.
