A new capsule-like device may provide an alternative screening method for Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer.

Pill-sized capsule could revolutionize cancer screening

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a device that may revolutionize cancer screening. The pill-sized capsule scans the esophagus using lasers that produce images with microscopic resolution. Doctors can check for pre-cancerous conditions without performing a biopsy. The capsule “grabs the microscopic images of the entire esophagus as opposed to just one little spot,” says Gary Tearney, MD, PhD. “We get a much better understanding and much better picture of the detailed structure of the esophagus and are able to get a better diagnosis.” Watch the video from Reuters and read more about the pill-sized capsule
