A multidisciplinary team from the MGH Cancer Center recently traveled to Kazakhstan’s capitol Astana to work with the city’s Department of Health to improve the oncology services at a local hospital. The invitation was facilitated through the Partners International Program, which has been working with the Kazakhstan government to improve health care in the former Soviet republic.
The MGH Cancer Center team comprised Eyal Attar, MD; James Cusack Jr., MD; Paul Busse, MD, PhD; Barbara Cashavelly, RN; and Kevin Vest. The team primarily stayed in Astana for a week.
The MGH visitors shadowed their counterparts in several areas of the hospital and participated in patient consultations and several surgical procedures. Of their visit, Attar says, "The trip was a very valuable experience. I hope our input will help our colleagues in Kazakhstan enhance and modernize their medical system, and we look forward to possible collaborations in the future."
The MGH Cancer Center team hopes to further the relationship when members of the Kazakhstan health care team visit the MGH in the coming months. For more information about the trip, contact Vest at email@example.com.
