Thanks to the support provided by unrestricted giving, Mass General was able to respond to 2004's tsunami in Southeast Asia.
Supported by Unrestricted Gifts, Mass General Provides Relief
In early 2005, two teams of Massachusetts General Hospital physicians and nurses traveled across the world to help a group of patients in desperate need: victims of the devastating tsunami that struck Southeast Asia in December 2004. Mass General was asked to take part in a tsunami relief mission organized by the caregiving program Project HOPE. Headquartered on a U.S. Navy ship off the coast of Indonesia’s hard-hit Banda Aceh province, Mass General clinicians delivered critical care to tsunami victims facing numerous illnesses, such as pneumonia and tuberculosis, and serious injuries, including severe burns and fractures. The team performed a total of 125 surgeries.
The Mass General clinicians were profoundly affected not only by the suffering of their patients, but also by their courage and graciousness. "The people there were remarkable," says Jane Kimbrough, RN, of the MGH Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. "Some have lost everything and everyone, yet they are the warmest, kindest people."
Mass General also helped to rebuild the Tuberculosis/Pulmonary Ward of Banda Aceh University Hospital, which was destroyed — and most of its staff and patients killed — by the tsunami.
The MGH’s humanitarian outreach efforts, both local and global, are made possible by unrestricted gifts. Thanks to donors like you who lend support to the MGH Fund, the hospital is able to respond to crises requiring immediate action. We are so grateful for your generosity.
