Mass General’s Gary Ruvkun, PhD, was awarded the 2008 Lasker Prize, widely considered the American version of the Nobel Prize.
The Discovery of MicroRNA

Gary Ruvkun, PhD Gary Ruvkun, PhD, is an investigator in Mass General’s Department of Molecular Biology and the MGH Center for Computational and Integrative Biology. He is dedicated to outstanding biomedical research, and he is the type of Mass General scientist whose work benefits from strong support of the MGH Fund.
In 2008, Dr. Ruvkun was one of just three scientists world-wide who were awarded the prestigious Lasker Prize. Many previous Lasker winners have later receivedgone on to receive the Nobel Prize.
Dr. Ruvkun was recognized for his landmark discovery of microRNA, a tiny genetic molecule that plays a crucial role in human biology. Thanks to Dr. Ruvkun and his colleagues, scientists around the world are now studying microRNA to learn how disease takes hold and to eventually identify new, lifesaving treatments methods.
