Giving

Two Mass General scientists stand out as great examples for the outstanding level of research expertise your gift to the MGH Fund can benefit.

Investigating the Origins of Disease

Konrad Hochedlinger, PhD

One fundamental use for donations to the MGH Fund is to directly support researchers who are committed to investigating the origins of disease. Bradley Bernstein, MD, PhD, and Konrad Hochedlinger, PhD, are two such outstanding investigators. Each was recognized last year with a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant as an Early Career Scientist.

Dr. Bernstein is a member of the MGH Department of Pathology. He is working to uncover the role of chromatin in the development of diseases such as cancer. He has already created new research tools in a large-scale study that mapped the family of switches responsible for keeping certain genes off until just the right time in an organism’s lifespan.

Dr. Hochedlinger’s laboratory, at the Mass General Center for Regenerative Medicine, studies methods for genetically reprogramming cells. As scientists spent recent years searching for a way to return cells to an embryonic-like state, Dr. Hochedlinger and his Mass General team pursued a unique approach to reach that end, and it worked.
