Cancer changes a family’s life, and without support is unbearable. That is what Bruce and Laurie Taylor believe and why they and their friends from The Timberland Company created the Granite State Quest, a community bike ride through southern New Hampshire that raises money for pediatric cancer research at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children.

To advance understanding and treatment of autism, Nancy Lurie Marks and the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation have established the Nancy Lurie Marks Professorship in the Field of Autism at Harvard Medical School (HMS). The chair’s first incumbent is Christopher McDougle, MD, who joined the MGH in October as the inaugural director of the Lurie Center for Autism.

04/04/2012: Young Patient Inspires Marathon Team Runner’s Determination to Finish

Sutanuka Lahiri plans to run through her pain to finish the Boston Marathon. Lahiri injured her leg while training and had to rest for several weeks. But she is determined to complete the race to honor 3-year-old Henry Geis, who is receiving treatment for leukemia at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Lahiri has been raising money for the hospital through her participation in the Mass General Marathon Team. The team is made possible by a partnership with John Hancock Financial.

03/06/2012: Run or Walk Across Fenway’s Home Plate and Support Our Veterans and Families

Hoping others join him, Fred Green is getting ready for the 2012 Run-Walk to Home Base, which will raise funds to support veterans and families affected by traumatic brain injury or combat-related stress. The Navy and Merchant Marine veteran is motivated by his own service in Vietnam as well as recent deployments of family members.

Claudius Conrad, MD, PhD, surgeon and director of the Music in Medicine Program at the MGH and the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, was the honored guest of Friedrich Löhr, the consul general of the Federal Republic of Germany in Boston, and presented a free “Music in Medicine” concert and lecture on Feb. 23.

The 2009 Storybook Ball, which took place at the Westin Waterfront Hotel, was an enormous success — with nearly 400 people in attendance! The Campaign for the Third Century of MGH Medicine kicked off Oct. 15 at the Westin Waterfront Boston. Members of the MGH Fund’s The 1811 Society enjoyed a pre-lecture reception with fellow donors and lecture panelists. More than 200 MGH Fund supporters then gathered in the Bulfinch tent for an exciting panel presentation from four of Mass General’s foremost physician-scientists. Topics ranged from smart targets that target tumors and the fight against HIV to advances in Alzheimer’s detection and treatment and a revolutionary cancer-detecting microchip.
