To ensure another 100 years of advancing medicine both locally and globally, at a special event at the Westin Waterfront Boston on Oct. 15, the hospital is publicly announcing the largest fundraising effort in its history: the Campaign for the Third Century of MGH Medicine. The campaign, under the theme "Individual Care, Global Impact" aims to raise $1.5 billion in support of five areas critically important to sustaining the MGH's mission.

MGH launches historic fundraising campaign
In an exam room in the Gray/Bigelow Building, cardiologist Michael Fifer, MD, is discussing treatment options with a patient. He carefully explains each available option, one of which is a pioneering minimally invasive heart procedure his team of colleagues helped refine. Meanwhile, in a cardiac unit on Ellison 9, nursing student Alicia D'Agostino, RN, smiles warmly as she talks with a patient about how he's feeling and the potential adjustment of his medication. Her preceptor Kathleen Carr, RN – who has 35 years of nursing experience – looks on, ready to offer advice. Across campus, researcher Kenneth Chien, MD, PhD, is searching for ways to diagnose and prevent heart disease before it even starts. He leans over to look into a microscope as a colleague explains what she's found.
The work these individuals do may differ, but together, they represent the MGH's fusion of excellence and innovation in care, research and education – all at one place – and all in the name of one common goal: to improve and save the lives of patients in the community and around the world. In 2011 – just a few months from now – the MGH will celebrate its bicentennial. But as the MGH honors its past, it stands poised and ready for the future. The campaign, under the theme "Individual Care, Global Impact" aims to raise $1.5 billion in support of five areas critically important to sustaining the MGH's mission. The five areas are: building medical facilities for the present and future; supporting the campaign's centers of excellence, which represent specialized focuses across the medical disciplines; promoting innovative research; enhancing medical education; and meeting new opportunities and challenges through unrestricted giving to the MGH Fund. More than $988 million already has been raised in support of these top priorities.
A recent $35 million gift from Peter and Paula Lunder and the Lunder Foundation has been particularly transformative to the campaign. The gift honors several MGH physicians – James J. Dineen, MD, Bruce Rosengard, MD, David Miller, MD, and Roman DeSanctis, MD – as well as the MGH's nursing staff, and will in part help fund a new education initiative, the Dr. James J. Dineen Maine-Mass General Health Education Partnership.
In recognition of the Lunders' generosity, the Building for the Third Century of MGH Medicine, set to open in the summer of 2011, will now be named the Lunder Building. This state-of-the-art facility, which will house the latest technology in emergency, radiation oncology, surgical, neurological and cancer care, represents the future of the MGH. It's where the work of the next generation of leaders in medicine, research and education – the next Michael Fifers, Kenneth Chiens, and Kathleen Carrs and Alicia D'Agostinos – will come together in providing the very best care for patients at the MGH and beyond.
