Welcome to the Center for Group Psychotherapy. The center is located in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. We offer a wide variety of groups including; psychodynamic/interpersonal, medical illness, older adult, special interest, young adult, and child and adolescent. All therapy groups are led by mental health professionals. While there is a fee for our groups, most insurance plans are accepted and limited access to free care is available.
Group psychotherapy is a form of therapy in which a small number of people generally meet weekly under the leadership of a trained therapist to help themselves and one another. In group therapy people learn about themselves and improve their interpersonal relationships. Members share feelings of isolation, depression, low self esteem or anxiety. They also share their progress and solutions to problems. Group therapy helps people make significant changes so they feel better about the quality of their lives.
The main mission of the Center for Group Psychotherapy is to promote the development of groups to meet the needs of the hospital community. It accomplishes this mission through training, publishing, and the development of treatment models in the Department of Psychiatry at MGH. We train residents and psychology interns in the theory and practice of group psychotherapy. Trainees learn from distinguished faculty who teach nationally and internationally.
