2008 Fellows

For 12 years, the Center has awarded Matina S. Horner, Ph.D. Summer Research Fellowships, giving undergraduate and graduate students the time, resources, and mentorship required to carry out meaningful research in the field.

The focus of these student research projects has ranged from prevention, to cross-cultural perspectives, to personality variables and biological factors. Many fellows continue their independent research projects after their fellowships have ended, often resulting in theses and publishable papers. Here is how our 2008 fellows are spent their summers at the Harris Center.

Michele Crisafulli

Michele Crisafulli

Michele is a 2nd year graduate student in clinical psychology at Boston University. For her fellowship project, she examined the effects that different messages have on the public's perceptions of individuals with anorexia nervosa. She hopes that this project will be one of a series of studies that will help provide scientific basis for anti-stigma campaigns.

Kyle De Young

Kyle De Young

Kyle is a 3rd year graduate student in clinical psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York. As a Matina S. Horner, Ph.D. fellow, he investigated at what level behavioral symptoms may be present during periods of remission but not be predictive of future relapse. More specifically, he attempted to clarify the distinction between lapses and relapse. He hopes this study will inform our definitions of remission and relapse and serve as a basis for his dissertation.

Jacob McGrane

Jacob McGrane

Jacob attends the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is a junior in the Biology Department. During his fellowship, he worked with the MGH Neuroendocrine Department on studies involving therapeutic strategies for reducing bone loss in anorexia nervosa. Through his work at MGH, he plans on developing an understanding of what is involved in clinical research to complement his previous laboratory research experiences.
