She's only a few days old, but Mary Meredith Jones is already making history. In addition to being one of Boston's first babies of the new year, she is the first baby born in MGH's third century as an institution. The hospital was founded in 1811 and is celebrating its bicentennial this year.

While Mary is her official first name, parents Jennifer and Christopher Jones of Woburn, Mass., plan to call her by her middle name, Meredith. They are delighted at the birth of their second child, and their first child, 2-year-old Margaret Jones, is very excited to be a big sister.

Meredith was delivered by Sean Pocock, MD, MPH, a physician for Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology, at 5:03 am on Jan. 1 weighing 7 pounds and 11.5 ounces. In celebration of Meredith's important part of hospital history, Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, presented her and her parents with a $200 savings bond and a gift basket full of bicentennial-themed baby goods. The presentation was the first of many events and activities planned during 2011 in celebration of the bicentennial.

The first baby boy born at the MGH in 2011 was Justin Leeds, who was born at 6:45 am weighing 7 pounds and 5.6 ounces. He is the third child of Scott and Taryn of Tewksbury, Mass. In celebration of Justin's birth, nurse Beth Rooney, RN, presented the family with a basket of bicentennial-themed baby goods. The family has had a close relationship with the hospital over the years, as their daughter Olivia received cancer care at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Her cancer is now in remission.

Mass General is the oldest hospital in New England and the oldest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, as well as the third oldest hospital in the United States. For additional information about its 200-year history, visit www.massgeneral.org/bicentennial.
