Did you know...?
The first public demonstration of anesthesia was conducted by Dr. William Thomas Green Morton, a Boston dentist, at the Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846. During this demonstration, Dr. John Warren excised a maxillofacial lesion from a patient anesthetized by Dr. Morton in a hall that later became known as the Ether Dome.
The Ether Dome, located on the fourth floor of the Bulfinch building, was registered as a National Historical Site in 1965 and is open to the public.
Many patients today choose sedation for their oral surgery operations. Like the legacy of the Ether Dome, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to be recognized as leaders in the safe and effective delivery of office-based ambulatory anesthesia including local anesthesia, conscious sedation, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia. Each doctor who practices with the Harvard Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates is board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery and is licensed to administer office anesthesia to provide for the comfort and safety of our patients.
