Robert A. Novelline, MD is Professor of Radiologyat HMS and Directorof the MGH Emergency Radiology Fellowship Program. His undergraduatedegree is from McGill University and medical degree from Boston University. After an MGH radiology residency, he completed fellowshipsin both vascular/interventional radiology and radiology education. In 1982, hewas appointed Director of Emergency Radiology. Dr. Novelline is a foundingmember of the American Society of Emergency Radiology. He received the ASER Gold Medal in 2000 and will receive their first Winged Caduceus Award in 2015.

          Dr.Novelline directed the HMS Core and Advanced Radiology Clerkships at MGHfrom1975 to 2012.  He was afounding member and first President of the Alliance of Medical StudentEducators in Radiology. In 2012 He received the AMSER Excellence inEducation Award. He is the author of the 4th through 6theditions of Squire?s Fundamentals of Radiology;currently the world?s largest selling radiology textbook for medical students.

          In2007 Dr. Novelline received the RSNA Outstanding Educator Award and willreceive the RSNA Gold Medal in December, 2015. Dr. Novelline has served theAUR inseveral capacities including AUR President and received the AUR Gold Medal in 2015.In 2004 Dr. Novelline received the Association of Program Directors in Radiology?sAchievement Award. HMS honored Dr. Novelline with its 2013 Sustained Excellencein Teaching Award.

ResearchDr. Novelline's research interests are Emergency Radiology and Radiology Education. Since 1982, he has served as Director of the MGH Division of Emergency Radiology. He installed one of the first CT scanners in an emergency imaging facility and pioneered investigations on the CT diagnosis of traumatic and non-traumatic emergencies. His CT protocols and techniques for imaging emergency patients have been widely implemented. He also developed a National Core Curriculum in Emergency Radiology for radiology residents and fellows.
Dr. Novelline has published over 150 original reports or reviews, and has authored or co-authored 11 textbooks. His publications include original observations on the imaging of trauma of the face, spine, chest and abdomen, as well as the imaging of many non-traumatic emergency conditions including appendicitis, diverticulitis and pulmonary embolism.
As Director of the Harvard Medical School Core Radiology Clerkships at MGH he has developed medical student curricula in radiology, which have been adopted at many US medical schools. Additionally he has published on many facets of medical student radiology education. Dr. Novelline is the author of Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology, currently one of the worlds largest selling medical student radiology textbooks, now printed in seven languages.
