Europe's X-ray body scanners, also known as backscatter machines, are banned in 27 countries. It's an abundance of caution in response to mounting concerns they may pose a public health risk.

Some new research, reported by ProPublica, claims between six and 100 passengers each year could get cancer from them. But most experts say headlines like that are alarmist.
"To put things in perspective, the dosage that is delivered from these scanners, the risk is absolutely minuscule or trivial," said Sahani.
Sahani, along with the Centers for Disease Control, the FDA and the American College of Radiology all said airport security scans are no more risky than radiation we're all exposed to from natural sources, like soil or rock.
