The 3D Imaging Service provides image post-processing of a wide variety of clinical imaging applications across all sub-specialties using 3D protocols tailored to each specific application.
The 3D Imaging service provide rapid turn-around time with a dedicated and highly-trained staff on a wide range of 3D software applications. We also offer these services to outside hospitals and imaging centers through our Tele3D Service. The following are examples of some of the applications of 3D imaging for various medical and surgical specialties.
Neurology/Neurosurgery ( View sample images )
Three-dimensional visualization of cerebral vasculature from CT angiography provides increased confidence in planning surgical intervention in life-threatening aneurysm cases. Three-dimensional views of MRI cortical surface and underlying tissues, with optional functional MRI fused with 3D anatomical display, enables neurosurgeons to plan procedures to spare crucial cortical areas, improve patient care and reduce operating room time.

Orthopedics
For skeletal trauma, especially involving the face, spine, pelvis, acetabulae, foot, and shoulder girdle, three-dimensional visualization is extremely helpful for comprehensive understanding of the case and aids in assessment, decision making and surgical planning.

Vascular Surgery
Three-dimensional renderings, multiplanar, oblique and curved reconstruction help visualize CT and MR angiography for many vascular cases. Combining these views with quantitative measures helps accurately design aortic stent specifications.

|
GI/GU
3D viewing of CT or MR angiography is helpful in analyzing vascular involvement in tumors for difficult pancreatic, renal and biliary cases being considered for resection. Applications such as CT colonography and CT urography can be helpful in non-invasively assessing anatomy and pathology.

Oral maxillofacial surgery
Visualizing the alveolar nerve canal on 3D CT can help prevent nerve damage or assess nerve involvement from extractions. For maxillofacial cases, three-dimensional rendering can guide surgical planning and treatment. In addition, the lab provides pre-processing of self-pay dental implant CT exams performed at the Mass General Imaging – Chelsea, Mass General West Imaging – Waltham and Mass General Imaging – Worcester Community locations.
- CT Facial Bones
- CT Mandible for Inferior Alveolar Nerve (IAN)
- CT Simplant for implant planning

Virtual bronchoscopy used in the assessment of tracheomalacia. |
Tracking the lumen of the trachea, lungs and bronchi and visualizing these passages with curved reconstructions or with virtual, intraluminal views helps visualize the anatomy.
- Chest CT - Virtual Bronchoscopy for Tracheal Lesions/Tracheomalacia
Other 3D imaging services are performed when indicated in departmental protocols, or by request from clinicians.
3D images for presentations
The 3D Lab creates images for use in PowerPoint presentations. Call the 3D Lab during normal business hours to make requests. Normal turnaround time is five business days.
