Mission Statement
To establish the standards of competencies for management and leadership at the MGH and provide managers with opportunities for continuing education to achieve those standards of competencies.
Background
A Task Force on Workforce Issues was convened as part of the hospital’s strategic planning process in 2004. The concept for the MGH Leadership Academy emerged from a guiding principle established by the task force - to take care of our current workforce and grow our own future workforce. In particular, the task force sought a mechanism for managers to share best practices.
Human Resources, through the Training and Workforce Development Office, convened a seven-member steering committee consisting of leadership from Nursing, administration, allied health, and ancillary services to guide the development and implementation of the MGH Leadership Academy.
MGH Competency Model (PDF version)
Human Resources defined five areas or “pillars” that form the framework of the hospital’s managerial positions: People Management, Process Management, Financial Management, Communication Management and Leadership. Based on the input from a series of focus groups conducted among managers at all levels of the organization, the steering committee identified 75 competencies considered requisites for success as a manager at the MGH.
Guiding Principles
The following criteria guide curriculum development:
• Be competency-based
• Deliver high value
• Provide an immediate benefit
• Balance theory with practice
• Be inclusive – offer cross-appeal to attract the first time supervisor to senior manager
