Who can take Leadership Academy courses?
Leadership Academy courses are available to MGH managers defined as anyone responsible for hiring, terminating and signing performance reviews.

Are Leadership Academy courses mandatory?
No. Continuous learning is one of the hallmarks of leadership. One of the goals of the Academy is to create an environment that facilitates that learning.

Are Continuing Education Units (CEU) available?
Not at this time, however, we will explore the feasibility of offering CEUs.

Are there any fees to take classes?
The Leadership Academy is funded entirely through Human Resources and courses are offered at no charge to departments for manager participation.

How is the curriculum determined?
The curriculum is based on the MGH Leadership Competency Model with input from an internal curriculum committee. Managers are encouraged to contact the Leadership Academy staff with potential content and or subject matter experts.

What is the MGH Leadership Competency Model?
The MGH has defined five pillars that form the framework of every manager’s job: People Management, Process Management, Financial Management, Communication Management and Leadership. Within those pillars, the MGH has identified 75 competencies that comprise the MGH Competency Model.

How was the competency model developed?
The Academy’s seven-member steering committee conducted a series of nine focus groups among managers at all levels of the organization to elicit their input on the skills and competencies vital to being a successful manager at the MGH. The steering committee synthesized this feedback into the MGH competency model.

Who serves on the faculty?
Current faculty includes Harvard Business School professors, members of the hospital’s management team, some of whom serve as adjunct faculty at local institutions of higher education, and various consultants.

How do I determine what courses to take?
Course descriptions are written to help managers determine the most appropriate courses based on a self-assessment of job responsibilities, experience and current skill level. Managers are encouraged to use the competency model to help frame the discussion during their annual performance evaluation.

Where do the courses take place?
Most courses take place at the Training and Workforce Development Office at Charles River Plaza, 165 Cambridge St., 2nd floor.

Will I receive a grade for the course?
No, however, the course will be documented as complete or incomplete in PeopleSoft based on attendance. This information will become part of the manager’s training record.
